On February 21, 2025, the Micronesian Presidents Summit commenced a meeting in Fiji before the High Level Talanoa on DSM. The meeting was chaired by Honorable Elina Akinaga, Secretary of Resources and Development and Head of Delegation of the Federated States of Micronesia and attended by H.E. Surangel Whipps, President of the Republic of Palau; H.E. David Adeang, President of Nauru; Honorable Kalani R. Kaneko, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Marshall Islands; and Honorable Ribanataake Tiwau, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development of the Republic of Kiribati.
The meeting was opened by welcoming remarks from Secretary Akinaga, on behalf of FSM H.E. Wesley W. Simina, extending President Simina’s apologies for not being able to attend the meeting due to urgent commitments at home and further expressed Chair’s appreciation for members’ effort in joining the meeting.
The Chair further emphasized that this week’s Talanoa has unified the region, evoking different perspectives within the whole region and emphasized that the meeting aims to provide an opportunity to share members’ experiences and viewpoints toward the topic of Deep Sea Mineral (DSM) as openly possible among members.
